“The earth expanding right hand and left hand,
The picture alive, every part in its best light,
The music falling in where it is wanted, and stopping where it is not wanted,
The cheerful voice of the public road, the gay fresh sentiment of the road”
– WALT WHITMAN
How is your summer going? Have you had a chance to adventure freely and consider the view? To get a away for a break?
A fulfilling work life, an active social life, a rewarding creative life, all are important for a balanced life. But we also need time out, to stop, and take in the view.
When we gaze at the horizon, the brain processes the spacial awareness we experience in a way that calms the nervous system. The sense of our location in the landscape allows experience to be felt more deeply, to land, and be more fully processed. To see widely and peripherally deepens not just our visual field, our field of awareness also deepens, giving space for the unseen to come into view.
Because we tend to have so much going on in our lives, we may forget to take a step back, and skip this processing phase. But then we cannot take stock, there is just too much piling up, we loose perspective, and that’s when we can end up overwhelmed.
When you receive Shiatsu or Thai Massage your nervous system calms in a similar way to this. You give yourself a chance to stop, and notice your inner horizon. In that space is the potential for the unseen to come into focus. You feel more deeply, and, without words, you find out the true nature of these feelings.
(Sometimes in my treatments, there are plenty of words! And this is OK – chat can be good for the nervous system too).
